Creating a Discord Bot (Step-by-Step)
Learn step-by-step how to create a bot application in the Discord Developer Portal, generate its token, enable privileged intents, and invite it to your server.
What You Need for Deployment
To run your own fully-featured Discord bot on Unitycord.gg, you need exactly two pieces of information:
| Required Information | Purpose | Where to find? |
|---|---|---|
| Discord Bot Token | Secret authorization key for your bot instance | Discord Developer Portal → Bot → Reset Token |
| Server Guild ID | Unique ID of your target Discord server | Discord App → Right click your server → Copy Server ID |
Step 1: Developer Portal & Create New Application
Visit the official Discord Developer Portal at discord.com/developers/applications and sign in with your Discord account.
- Click the blue 'New Application' button in the upper right.
- Provide a name for your bot (e.g. YourCommunity Bot) and agree to Discord's Developer Terms.
- Tip: Under 'General Information', you can upload an app icon (avatar) and enter a short description.
Step 2: Create Bot & Generate Token
- Navigate to the 'Bot' tab in the left sidebar menu.
- Locate the 'Token' section directly under the bot username.
- Click 'Reset Token' (and confirm with your 2FA authentication if enabled).
- Click 'Copy' to copy the secret bot token to your clipboard.
Critical Security Warning regarding Bot Token
The bot token acts as the master password for your bot. Never share it publicly or with untrusted third parties. Anyone with access to this token can execute actions as your bot.
Step 3: Enable Privileged Gateway Intents
To enable all Unitycord features like member stat counters, welcome messages, tickets, and live status sync, activate all 3 switches under <strong>'Privileged Gateway Intents'</strong>:
| Gateway Intent | Required for | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Presence Intent | Real-time online status and activity tracking | Toggle ON |
| Server Members Intent | Welcome greeting system, role assignment & member stats | Toggle ON |
| Message Content Intent | Command execution, moderation logs & ticket messaging | Toggle ON |
Remember to Save Changes!
After enabling the switches, click the green <strong>'Save Changes'</strong> bar at the bottom.
Step 4: Retrieve Discord Server Guild ID
- Open Discord and access User Settings (gear icon bottom left).
- Go to 'Advanced' in the sidebar under App Settings.
- Enable the 'Developer Mode' toggle switch.
- Exit Settings, right-click your server icon in the server list on the left, and click 'Copy Server ID'.
Step 5: Invite Bot to Your Discord Server
- In the Discord Developer Portal, navigate to 'OAuth2' → 'URL Generator'.
- Under Scopes, check both 'bot' and 'applications.commands'.
- Under Bot Permissions, select either 'Administrator' or necessary permissions (Manage Channels, Manage Roles, Send Messages, Embed Links, Read Message History).
- Copy the generated URL below, open it in your browser, select your server, and authorize the bot.
